Bogus Screen Savers
It's often the most commonly accepted things in our lives that when viewed with a questioning eye, reveal the ironies in our choices. I was reminded of one of them the other day when I was in a client's office. Sitting before a longtime coaching client, I noticed from the corner of my eye something odd. There displayed on his desktop computer monitor was what looked like an active computer program with some swirly pattern moving randomly across the screen.
I recognized it immediately as one of those screen saver patterns that some people program into their computers to come up after a designated time.
These programs were originally intended to limit the time that those little glowing dots on your monitor were being illuminated while you're not using your screen. If you didn't have one of these programs running, and left the monitor sitting with the same pattern on it, eventually the pattern would start etching itself into the face of your computer screen. After a while, the screen would not have a clean representation due to the burned phosphorous of the screen. It would not render the screen useless, just noticeably scarred.
The original screen savers were intended to prevent this from happening. They indeed were just what their name implied - they saved your screen and prevented scaring. After a designated time of non-use, the monitor display would go to a blank or near blank mode. Later revisions had a minimum traveling message or design that showed the computer was still on. It traveled to prevent any one area from being continually illuminated, thus keeping in the spirit of the original programming. These revisions were added because some people could not tell whether their computer was on or not after the screen went blank.
