The Cost of Non Performance

Often it's what we refuse to see that costs us the most. While I was teaching a goal-setting class one day, a person asked me a simple question. It was an honest question that I had heard before from others.

The interesting thing about it was that the person asking it really did know the answer. Unfortunately, she was fishing for information that, had I gave it, would have diverted her from admitting this. To add further damage, it might have even created much lost time in her pursuits. So I practiced a bit of restraint while responding.

Her question related to a recommendation. She wanted to know what books she could read that would motivate her. The challenge that she expressed to me just prior to the request was keeping herself motivated enough to follow through on her goals. She believed had she been able to do this she said she would have accomplished so much more in her life.

As a facilitator and fellow human being, it was not my place to agree nor disagree with her. I've learned early that people are usually very motivated, even when they say they aren't. You can see this in how people invest in themselves. If you look at how a person occupies their time, you'll see what it is that the person is most motivated toward.

Now you may have noticed that there are a lot of individuals who spend their time day in and day out in mindless or fruitless activities. You might conclude that these people can't possibly be motivated, and your conclusion would not be on the mark.

The truth is, these individuals are highly motivated. It's just that the motivation that they have is toward exactly what it is that they are doing. Even if what it is that they are doing might be considered less then desirable to you. What they are doing is exactly what it is that they want to do. This includes any complaining that they might be doing about what they are doing and not doing.

Does this sound bizarre to you? It shouldn't.
