One Man's Secret
I was reminded the other evening of a story I'd heard years ago. I was speaking with a client about a job situation he was in. It became evident through our talk that he had some strong reservations regarding the viability of the opportunity. And it was during that conversation that I remembered and shared the tale.
In truth, I have no idea as to the source or validity of the story I shared. When I do share it, I make no apologies toward that end since I had long ago forgotten the reference whence I first heard it from. In conversation, I offer it as an anecdote in hopes that the point of the story will sit in far enough for the people receiving it to reflect on the choices before them.
It may have been offered to me in this same way when I first heard it. The story itself has echoed many times as an anchor of wisdom that I wish I had listened to more than less. This may be the reason that I remember the story more than the giver of it.
I had hoped that the same impact would befall the person with whom I shared it. There was a certain aspect of his situation that I remember having been through time and again in my own business practice. There were times when I had a decision before me as to hire a client or not. When push comes to shove, I go back to the story that keeps things in prospective for me.
Let me share it with you as I did the other evening . . .
There was a very successful old-timer whom an inquisitive business upstart asked as to what he attributed his unparalleled success. The old-timer didn't hesitate in his response. He said that the reason he was so successful was because of how he learned to treat business opportunities. He learned early on to treat them all as if they were meals.
