I See I See
It's not something too important, yet it's a great tool. I'm talking about a short acronym I invented years ago when I first started mediating. It was invented to assist me in working toward resolution in areas where possible conflict could be avoided. It's been shared with many clients over the years and just recently one of my clients asked me if I would please write it downed for him. I said surely.
The acronym is really simple enough. It's based on an even simpler premise. That premise is shared perception aids to harmony. As most people are aware, perceptions shape our reality and we make decisions based on the reality we perceive. When you shift your perception, you shift your reality and the choices you make may change dramatically. This works well in dealing with others.
Many conflicts can be avoided by getting both sides to acknowledge the perception of the other side. The willingness to do this often builds bridges that could otherwise never be crossed if they were not there. Acknowledgment helps with this bridge building process.
Some people might believe that this is ‘giving in' to the other side. That even opening up to seeing the other side's point of view weakens their position. This is far from the truth and very understandable. Most people argue positions rather than interests. Opening yourself up to hearing the other side may very well weaken your position. It also gives greater opportunity to have both sides' interests served. This makes for a much better resolution.
Please consider the following: Understand that acknowledgment is not agreement. Acknowledgment is merely letting the other side know you are aware of how they are perceiving the situation and possibly connoting understanding. Never does it infer anything else. It lets the other side know that you're open enough to see the situation differently than you are now seeing it.
