Running on Empty

It might not occur to you until the "powers that be" smack you in the face with it. The subtle reminders like the quickened pace in your step and perhaps heightened heartbeat may not drive the point home. If it's our common mode that we're in, we tend to continue without deviation.

What usually grabs our attention and jars us out of our trance state are things like:

  1. personal conflicts occurring more often;
  2. things being not as sharp as they could be; or even
  3. a direct assault like the car dying in the middle of traffic.

It's generally all of the above topped with a very bad head cold and an overall feeling of exhaustion that gets the point across for me. I'm one to ignore the more casual signs and must engage a higher authority to get me to pay attention. Even when this occurs, the response time is in low gear due to the priority setting I've given it.
