Secretly Happy
I tend to bring up many unusual pieces of information in my classes. My intent is to get the people attending to really think at a higher and deeper level than they've ever done before. What usually occurs when I do this is what we call "an AHA!" moment for those who really want to get something from the class. One such insight is the story I share about knowledge not being power. Another is what I'll share here today.
I sometimes start the class by asking if there's anyone who wants truly to be happy. There's almost an instantaneous response from the group to the affirmative. I then ask them if they could define what happiness is for them. What the individuals in the group share is a potpourri of situations and things that brings them fulfillment, contentment and joy.
The interesting thing about what they share is what's missing in their descriptions. I can't say it's one specific thing that is missing though. What I can say for sure is that their description does not describe happiness at all. In fact, what I do hear is not so much happiness but more precisely a prerequisite for happiness.
Hearing this doesn't surprise me anymore. It's a rare occurrence for me ever to hear an accurate description of happiness from people who have not giving it much thought.
For the most part, the general population doesn't know what happiness is. They usually have a distant memory of feeling happily at one time or another. This is what they try to recall and described when asked what it is. That's about as far they can go, which is quite sad to know when you see so many people pursuing it so rigorously.
After hearing all these descriptions, I add some tidbits of information that tend to raise the eyebrows of the people in the group.
So, what do you think those tidbits were and how would this effect your happiness knowing them? Good question. If you're ready for the truth, this information is life changing!
