Mail Bag: Avoiding Capture
Dear Coach!
I am tentatively scheduled to speak for an hour or so at a local business in a few weeks. The manager wants me to speak to a group about what led me to pursue my profession, my training, an elementary description of what is involved in the work I do and some examples of how it is beneficial to my clients. I think I can include these things and open a discussion geared to the audience's personal interests. I will also likely lead them through some exercises and am toying with the idea of doing a demo. I have two questions for you:
- How do you hold an appropriate boundary so that people don't go into a deep and perhaps inappropriate sharing?
- How do you handle a shy or non participatory group?

This is a great set of questions. They are often asked by my clients who get into situations having to do with public speaking, business meetings and even private encounters. First and foremost I congratulate you for making a commitment to get in front of an audience. Do not take my kudos lightly. The fear of public speaking is more popular than the fear of death and you're facing the big one of the two here.
