That "Fiercely Independent" Attitude

I heard it again just two days ago. An old timer let me know about a conversation he had with a newcomer. Seems that the newcomer was complaining to him about not making as many sales as he'd hoped for. I could hear by the tone of the old timer's voice that he was shaking his head in disgust as he shared with me a question he directed back at the newcomer.

The question he asked in response to the newcomer's dilemma was simple - "How many ‘Office Support' calls have you made in the few weeks ya been banging on doors."

The response from the newcomer was worthy of the head shaking. It was "Well, er, uh . . . none."

It's understandable why the old timer was shaking his head. It's just as understandable why the new guy was not as productive as he could be. That "fiercely independent" attitude he was sporting was showing its ugly impact. The support system that the organization put in place was not being taken advantage of. The resulting opportunities, one after another, were slipping through the cracks in the newcomer's system.
